The straight fringe might well be the biggest male hairstyle trend this 2011. The straight fringe in the past was a little too sober and serious and in 2009 was too long, reaching almost to the eyebrows. But since 2010, straight fringe has become more versatile and are offered with more variations to suit specific face shapes. The best way to wear a straight fringe is to keep the back and sides short while trying out different fringe lengths. The side swept style of a straight fringe is more popular than the close – crop straight fringe.

A variation of the straight fringe is the layered or textured fringe evocative of the fringes worn by Julius Caesar. The layered fringe is maintained longer and is combed forward from the temples and crown to cling to the forehead. With wax or pomade a curlier and wet look effect is created. A curly fringe is less structured and more casual than a straight fringe and is for naturally curly hair. Lenny Kravitz is the best example for men with curly hair. The rock star has often changed his curly styles and yet continued to attract a lot of attention from women. I always think of Guile from Street Fighter when I see flat top hair (stop laughing, it’s not funny). I’m not sure what would possess someone to want flat top hair, as it was all the rage in the 80′s, and for me, that is a decade that just didn’t need to happen.

Today you mostly see it on guys in government service, like astronauts and the like. In fact, flat top hair is considered especially manly. I disagree, as I think going bald is really how you show your manliness (thanks for that Vin Diesel) but who am I to disagree with 40 years of evolution? The flat top was made popular in the 50′s by men with military backgrounds, and is still worn today by guys that are higher up than most. Weight lifters (oh the irony), policeman and some movie stars. In fact, Leonardo Dicaprio wore on in “This Boy’s Life.”

I know. I want to cry too. There’s no excuse for that. Really.

While flat top hair has been considered strictly a man’s hairstyle, I have seen pictures where women have their hair cut in a similar fashion. I’m going to spare you the details, but it doesn’t make them look feminine at all. I think we need to leave this hairstyle up to the military. I know we’re supposed to be on equal footing, but like taking out the trash, announcing sports and opening jars, some things really should be left just for the men.

Yes, thinning hair happens . I’m sure we have all seen that older guy with the really bad comb over at the company party, trying his very best to look young and failing. When your hair is spiked up and tousled, who knows how long it is or how much is left? This one is also super easy. Start with medium short hair, and then take a handful of styling mousse to your head. Ruffle your hands around in your hair until it looks good to you, and then blow dry to set your style. Flat-top hairstyles, otherwise known as the flat-top crew cut was the fashion statement of the 50’s. Men had the hair mostly shaved from the side of the head with a very short amount left on top and styled straight up making the whole top of the head flat, thus being given the name of flat-top. Although later on, styles would change, and men started growing their hair out longer, the flat-top seems to always have been present in some groups after that and even in the present day. This style doesn’t require much maintenance which is very practical for the man who is always on the go, and it is also easy to cut at home. The process requires a shaver, and maybe some scissors. Mistakes are generally either easy to fix or to cover up as well. For the men who have their hair done at the salon, it is probably one of the quickest and least expensive hair cut to have done, therefore creating another advantage. While it is true that many men today opt not to have their hair styled in that fashion, there will always be those men who revert back to the 50’s whether it’s for practical reasons or simply the love of the design. Considering it is now sixty years ago when these became so popular and it is still going strong, there probably won’t be a time when these cease to exist.
