Tricks of the Trade – Hair Volume
One of the biggest banes to a woman (or man’s) hair is a lack of volume. Some people have hair that is too thick and heavy to have volume. Other women have hair that is too mousy and limp – either way, volume just isn’t coming naturally. Luckily, there are a few little tricks of the trade that stylists use every day to get the volume their clients want, and you can have it too with a little know-how.
A big tip for the stylist to use to fake volume is the back comb. Teasing the hair at the crown up and spraying it before laying it down causes a high crown look, which equals volume. You can use a teasing comb and hair spray to get this affect, or there is hair accessories today that you can clip in under your hair to make it lie higher when it’s finished, creating that volumizing effect.
There are many products on the market for giving men and women volume in their hair no matter what their hair type. Unfortunately, these products are often ineffective and sometimes just annoying – sticky residue, clumping hair, and a greasy look are just a few side effects of these bad products. Ask your stylist for professional products that both work and do good things for your hair, like volumizing mousse for men and heat-resistant leave-in conditioners for women.
Finally, taking good care of your hair by proper and consistent shampoo and conditioning can help you hair be at its healthiest, in turn helping it be light and more voluminous than it would be otherwise.
